Disney plus started this year callendar with their first TV show for phase 4 of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), WandaVision new series starring Elisabeth Olsen, reprising her hole as Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, and Paul Bettany as Vision, first return after his Infinity War (2018) appearence. The series was created for Diney+ by Jac Schaeffer, the new Disney TV show WandaVision was premiered this week to much acclaim from critics and audience, speacially for their homage to classic sitcoms and performance of both lead actors, and indeed it is an outstanding performance, beyond that, we are going to take a closer look at the first impressions of the show and try to figure it out what is making this show so interesting and intriging at first look, but…as always…because this is the internet, the show did not came without some criticisism online, people on Twitter have claimed being “bored” and the show being a “slow burner”, maybe the format did not appeal to them, but I can’t agree with those critics, I suggest you watch the show and see if it is for you, I liked a LOT, and I wasn’t expecting it, if I was going to resume what makes WandaVision so interesting in just one word, it would be “Undertone”, allow me to elaborate.
The Show starts with immersing the audience in this 50’s Dick Van Dyke’s style sitcom and we get so see these powerful super heroes adapt to this strange pocket universe and a new format of show, and all the references of the era are there, for the fans of classic sitcoms like the previously mentioned Dick Van Dyke show, who by the way, consulted in the series production, and the Bewitched show starred by Elizabeth Montgomery, the cheesy lines, the audience laugh track, the slapstick comedy and they all work…the jokes are funny, the performances are engaging, the characters entertaining and the homages to the era land as they should, but it is right then and there, when we are having fun, we get glimpses of a grimm undertone, that is always there throughout the episodes, lurking in the show. It starts with the characters strugling with the details of their origins in this misterious television world, and cracks on this pocket universe stars to appear.
The cheesy lines and slapstick comedy and all those sitcoms gimmicks give the audience a false sense of confort, hiding a dark background and grimm atmosphere, Wandavision remarkable undertone it’s so intriging that we, the audience, can’t help to make several questions about this world that seems to be a simulation, almost a Truman’s Show like scenario. Wanda, the Escarlet Witch is one of the most powerful super heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Univerce and her powers allow her to bend reality as demonstrated in the events of the House of M comics, in which the show is inspired.
As the episodes go on the atmosphere grows darker with more characters are being introduced, they all give us a false sense of security, some are almost strangely absent of the moment, and appear to be almost not there at all, too compliant at times, like empty objects, and are other characters that conveniently engage too much in this false reality as if they interact too much with the events in Wanda’s world and also all of them appear to make Wanda question the reality she is in, Kathryn Hahn character Agnes is an exemple of a new character being introduced in the series that bring life to the show with her comedy while also being misterious and enigmatic, almost everything she says can be interpreted in a different way, the questions keeps coming in and our heroes can’t seem to be able to anwers the most simple questions asked of them, where are you from? how long have you been married? how did you get here? The first episode Wanda and Vision strugle to remember a mark in their calender, in the next scene Vision can’t seem to point what exactly the company he works does.

The Show also give new layers to Wanda and Vision characters, specially in Paul Bettany character, Vision adapts very well to a more “light hearted” scenario, his manners and characteristics feels refreshing for the super hero steriotype, he trully is a more fun character as ever and with new layers of humanity to a otherwise “artificial” character, the script really does demand and gives the oportunity to Paul Bettany performance to shine, his charm certainly shines through in the new format, even with this refreshed character we still feel Vision being a little more disconected to this reality as Elisabeth Olsen character Wanda, Wanda always seem to question more the reality she is in and their origins, and we get to see new characteristics of the Scarlet Witch, we dive deeper in Wanda’s psychology, we already saw her being more of a villain in the Age of Ultron, and also dealing with the lost of her brother Pietro Maximoff , Quicksilver, but now we see how far the habbit hole really goes, and that is the show main focus, Wandas mental state and her abilities to change reality, maybe she can open the multiverse, who knows, guess we will just have to wait.

Well, that’s all I can say without giving spoilers, feel encourage to see the show. I hope the show take us deeper in Wandas mind and her psyche, I loved the concept and I am anxious to see where everything goes.
